New England hands basements a specific problem. Frozen ground cannot absorb anything, so when a thaw arrives the runoff travels sideways and leans on whatever foundation is in its path. Put a heavy spring rain on top of that and you get the wet basement calls that fill our schedule every March and April.

A sump system is the answer, but only when it is built correctly. The pit has to sit where the water actually collects. The pump has to be sized to how much water it will move. And the discharge has to carry that water far enough from the foundation that it is not simply making a loop back into the pit.

Power is the other half of the equation. The storms that make a pump work hardest are the same storms that knock the power out, which is exactly when a pump with no backup becomes a decoration. A battery backup covers that gap, and for finished basements it is usually money well spent.

How do I test my sump pump?
Pour a bucket of water slowly into the pit until the float rises. The pump should kick on by itself, move the water out, and shut off cleanly on its own. If it hesitates, runs without pumping much, or does not stop, something is wrong. Do this in late winter, before you actually need it.
What are the warning signs of a worn-out sump pump?
Listen and watch. Grinding or rattling, a motor that runs constantly without lowering the water, cycling on and off rapidly, or visible rust and a pit full of debris are all warnings. A pump that has sat unused for years is also suspect. These are mechanical parts and they do wear out.
Do I really need a battery backup sump pump?
Consider what a spring storm does. It dumps water and knocks out power at the same time, and a pump with no power cannot move a drop. If your basement is finished, stores anything you care about, or has flooded before, a backup is cheap next to what one flood costs.
Where does the water from a sump pump go?
Away from the house, and far enough that it does not soak back down along the foundation and return to the pit. Discharge lines also have to be routed so they do not freeze shut in the middle of winter, which is a common reason a working pump suddenly stops keeping up.
How much does sump pump installation cost?
